Each texture, model and decal has been reviewed and approved by Valve, ensuring Portal with RTX is evocative of the original game and the upgrades Valve introduced to the testing facility’s assets in Portal 2. To take full advantage of ray tracing, your game assets need to have physically based properties, and ideally be geometrically detailed, too. Without physically based rendering materials, light reacts identically on all surfaces. By specifying the attributes of each material and their reflectivity, light bounces, reflects, diffuses and dissipates realistically across each texture. Portal’s unique selling point is of course the ability to take anything through a portal, and see through them, something that hadn’t been done before its release.
Update history
Referred to as the Portal 2 Test Battery, the participants of the study completed a series of test chambers that progressively became harder. Several test chambers from Portal reappear in Portal 2 , decayed by the passage of time. At first, GLaDOS is excited about her non-human test subjects, but later becomes dissatisfied because the two robots cannot truly die, and at one point also gets uncomfortable with their close partnership. At the end of the story, the robots gain entry to "the Vault", a storage facility of thousands of humans placed in stasis. GLaDOS thanks the robots for their acquisition of new test subjects, and promptly destroys the robots. In a post-credits scene, Wheatley, still trapped in space along with another core, voices his regrets about betraying Chell.

Chell has been kept in stasis for a long time since the first game ended and is awoken when a tiny personality core named Wheatley tries to break them out of the facility. His last request was for the mind of his assistant Caroline to be transferred—by force, if necessary—to an advanced computer designed to store a human consciousness, which he had previously commissioned to save himself, creating GLaDOS.
